TMJ Dentist London Ontario
What is TMJ?
Located in front of both ears, the Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) attaches the lower jaw with the skull’s temporal bone. We use the TMJ every time we swallow, chew and talk making it one of the most commonly used joints in our body. To allow for greater, more protected jaw movement, a smooth surface of cartilage discs and facial muscles line the bones.
Typically, TMJ pain occurs when the cartilage discs shift from their proper alignment and can be worsened by trauma, arthritis or constant gum chewing. Symptoms include:
- Difficulty with opening the mouth all the way
- Jaw popping/clicking/locking
- Temple/cheek pain
- Regular head/neck/jaw aches
- Ear pain /dizziness/ringing in the ear
Pain associated with TMJ ranges anywhere from harsh and stabbing, to constant and dull. It can hurt with every attempt to chew, talk or swallow and often causes random muscle spasms.
